Hi Mom, Send Sheep!

My Life as the Coyote and After

Tim Derk (author), David Robinson (foreword)

The longtime mascot of the San Antonio Spurs looks back fondly on his years as the Coyote

At the age of forty-seven, Tim Derk’s career as mascot for the San Antonio Spurs was soaring as the team headed toward their third NBA Championship. That career ended abruptly when he suffered a massive stroke. Despite remarkable success in regaining speech and movement, Derk knew there was no going back.

Hi Mom, Send Sheep! is his fond look at his years as the Coyote. Beginning with his recruitment from a community theater stage, through the early days when he carried his improvised costume to the arena in garbage bags, to the heady championship years, Derk paints a colorful picture of his life in the NBA. Wry anecdotes of Coyote misadventures are interspersed with vivid reminiscences of the owners, managers, and players who helped build one of the great sports franchises. David Robinson, retired San Antonio Spurs favorite, contributes a foreword to Hi Mom, Send Sheep!, adding his own charming note to open the book.

Part sports memoir, part inspirational tale, Hi Mom, Send Sheep! is above all the well-told story of a life adventurously lived.

Praise

“Tim’s life is his best act. Picking up the house key can be more heroic than a back flip basket dunk in a furry costume. It’s heart we’re talking about, and Tim’s heart more than compensates for a damaged brain. Thanks, Tim, for the laughs and . . . and the lessons. You’re a hell of a coyote but an even better teacher. When shadows darken our own days, we will remember your light.    ”

Phil Hardberger, former mayor of San Antonio

“During my days playing with the Spurs, one of my more difficult tasks was focusing on the coach—and not the Coyote—during timeouts. The NBA’s best mascot was so funny that the entire team wanted to see what he would do next! Tim—aka 'the Coyote'—entertained fans and players alike for many years, and this book is filled with funny and poignant stories from his wonderful career. It brought back a lot of great memories for me.”

Steve Kerr, former San Antonio Spur
