San Antonio's Spanish Missions: A Portrait

Rev. David Garcia (foreword), Mike Osborne (photographs), Lewis F. Fisher (contributor)

More than 100 photographs of San Antonio's UNESCO World Heritage Site

Since their construction in the eighteenth century, the Spanish missions of San Antonio have held a fascination for visitors and residents alike. At last, San Antonio’s five colonial missions have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and this elegant book displays the missions’ cultural glory through more than 100 color photographs by architectural photographer Mike Osborne, along with historical images.

San Antonio Spanish Missions provides a distinctive contemporary portrait of the five mission complexes that will help readers, travelers, and historians better understand the cultural relevance of these architectural wonders. The best known, the Alamo, acts as a memorial to its defenders and, along with the missions San José, Concepción, Espada, and San Juan, makes up what is known as the San Antonio missions, a series of outposts that were established between 1690 and 1720 to help spread Christianity.

Mike Osborne’s camera captures the architecture of Spain and Mexico that has influenced San Antonio for nearly three centuries. Many of the city’s treasured landmarks and some of its most festive events are immediately recognizable, while others are undiscovered gems in a city rich with historical charm. Color photographs range from interior views of the Alamo to a mariachi mass at San José to a composite of rifle portholes in Espada’s bastion.

Introductory text to each section is by Lewis F. Fisher, whose books include The Spanish Missions of San Antonio, American Venice: The Epic Story of San Antonio’s River, and Saving San Antonio: The Precarious Preservation of a Heritage. The foreword is by Rev. David Garcia, director of the Old Spanish Missions, Inc.
