Tigard Public Library

Portland, Oregon

Yes, 1914 was a big year, because it was the birth year of famed Oregon poet William Stafford, author of The Osage Orange Tree.

There’ll be a variety of events, activities and programs throughout Oregon and elsewhere in 2014, including the annual William Stafford Birthday Commemorative Readings and “Stafford Birthday Parties.”

Paulann Petersen, Friends of William Stafford board member and Oregon’s Poet Laureate, will again administer the January birthday events.

Oregon Reads 2014 will be a yearlong event, sponsored by the Oregon Library Association, whose 200-plus libraries will encourage visitors to read Stafford’s works. Kim Stafford, his son and author of 100 Tricks Every Boy Can Do, kicks off Oregon Reads 2014 with a reading of poems and a talk about his father, 2 p.m. Jan. 14 at Tigard Public Library, 13500 S.W. Hall Blvd.
