In the Country of Empty Crosses by Arturo Madrid, with photographs by Miguel Gandert, has won the Texas Institute of Letters Fred Whitehead Award for Best Design of a Trade Book. Kristina Kachele designed the book. The award will be presented at the Texas Institute of Letters annual meeting and banquet, April 5–6 in San Marcos, Texas. Read more.
In the Country of Empty Crosses also received the Fabiola Cabeza de Baca Award, given annually by the Historical Society of New Mexico for an outstanding publication relating to domestic life in New Mexico. The award will be presented on April 20 at the Convention Center in Las Cruces. Read more.
